No. 6 South Callaway baseball finishes third in Lebanon Tournament

LEBANON - The state-ranked South Callaway Bulldogs scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to clip host Lebanon 5-3 in Saturday's third-place game of the First State Community Bank Wood Bat Tournament.

South Callaway forced extra innings when it tied the game at 2 on senior shortstop Peyton Leeper's two-out RBI double in the seventh. The Bulldogs (13-6) - who went 2-2 in the tournament - share the No. 6 ranking with Fair Grove in Class 3 by the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Senior left fielder Tyklen Salmons led off South Callaway's eighth with a single to left, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After junior first baseman Jared Mistler drew a walk, Salmons scored the go-ahead run when junior starter Tyler Lepper was safe on an error.

Mistler moved to third on the play and Lepper advanced to second. Both runners then came home when senior third baseman Dustin Loucks singled to center, giving the Bulldogs a three-run lead.

Class 5 Lebanon came up with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but South Callaway was able to smother the Yellowjackets' attempted rally.

Mistler went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored as the Bulldogs produced nine hits. Salmons finished 2-for-4 with a triple and scored two runs.

Lepper (3-1) went 7 innings to wrap up the win, allowing three runs - two earned - on nine hits. He struck out one and walked one.

South Callaway finished up pool play earlier Saturday with a 7-2 loss to Class 5 Camdenton. The Lakers broke a tie at 2 by putting up four runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.

Leeper was 2-for-4 with a double and scored both of the Bulldogs' runs as they were limited to six hits. Salmons - who started on the mound and then moved to left field - was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Salmons (2-2) took the loss, giving up seven runs - five earned - on nine hits in 5 innings. He finished with six strikeouts and three walks.

South Callaway resumes Show-Me Conference play with a trip to Fatima at 5 p.m. today. The Bulldogs are 2-0 in the SMC.
