Track and field: Fulton's Gaines moves on to sectionals in 3,200

MEXICO - Senior Mason Gaines was victorious in the boys' 3,200 meters as the Hornets took 12th place as a team at the Class 4, District 4 championships Saturday.

Gaines recorded a time of 9 minutes, 58.39 seconds to advance to the Sectional 2 championships this Saturday at MICDS in St. Louis.

Fulton senior Gabe Luebbert also moved on by coming in second in the 800 (2:02.00) and fourth in the 1,600 (4:38.78). The Hornets accumulated 32 points Saturday.

In the girls' division, junior Maitane Sandonis advanced by taking second place in the 300 hurdles (:48.96) as Fulton took 11th place with 31 points. Sandonis was part of the Lady Hornets' 400 relay - teaming with seniors Shawnie Hempfield and Adrea Shadbolt, and sophomore Maddie Henley - that qualified for sectionals with its fourth-place finish (:53.23).

Hempfield also moved on to sectionals by coming in third in the triple jump (34 feet, 3 inches).

Fort Zumwalt East captured the District 4 girls' team title with 134 points. McCluer and Parkway North shared the District 4 boys' team championship with 92 points apiece.
