Track and field: Pani, Fulton girls come in third at Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY CITY - Senior Kate Pani won both the 100 and 200 meters, and took second in the long jump as the Lady Hornets finished third at the Montgomery County Early Invitational in Tuesday night's season opener.

North Callaway senior Abrielle Berry prevailed in the shot put to help spur the Ladybirds to a sixth-place finish.

In the boys' division, Fulton senior Tre Vaughn won the triple jump and senior LeCheyon Williams was second in the pole vault as the Hornets were also third overall.

North Callaway junior Paden Lewis was victorious in the shot put and junior Zeb Meffert sailed to a win in the pole vault to spark the Thunderbirds to a seventh-place team finish.

Pani triumphed in the 100 and 200, posting respective times of 14.31 and 29.70 seconds as the Fulton girls logged 88 points. Pani was second in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

Pani also teamed with junior Maitone Sandonis and fellow seniors Adrea Shadbolt and Shawnie Hempfield to take first in the 400 relay in :56.44. Hempfield prevailed in the triple jump at 33-9 and Sandonis won the 300 hurdles in :54.49.

Berry earned the victory in the shot with a throw of 36-10 as the North Callaway girls recorded 49 points. Sophomore Kira Douglas came in second for the Ladybirds in the pole vault (7-6) and freshman Olivia Isaacks was third in the high jump (4-8).

Vaughn secured first place in the triple jump with a leap of 38-8 and Williams finished second in the pole vault at 9-6 as the Fulton boys collected 80.5 points. Senior Gabe Luebbert took second for the Hornets in the 1,600 (4:59.90), senior Nazir McClain placed third in both the 200 (:25.58) and the long jump (17-11), and freshman AJ Henderson came in third in the 100 (:12.59).

Fulton's quartet of senior Tommy Kingsley, Henderson, McClain and junior Sam Schiltz finished third in both the 400 (:48.99) and 800 (1:43.42) relays.

Lewis logged the win in the shot with a toss of 46-7 1/2 and Meffert triumphed in the pole vault at 10-0 as the North Callaway boys ended up with 48 points. Sophomore Will Jeffries was second for the Thunderbirds in the discus (111-3).

The Missouri School for the Deaf boys were 12th with 3.5 points.

Warrenton clinched the boys' team championship with 117 points, while host Montgomery County nailed down the girls' team title with 120.

MSD travels to the Linn Invitational at 3:30 p.m. today. Fulton competes in the Thunderbird Open at North Callaway at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 27.
