Baseball: Battle 17, Fulton 6

The Hornets were tormented by the Spartans' 15-hit blitz and significant scoring binges in Wednesday night's nonconference loss at the high school athletic complex.

Battle broke a 1-1 tie by erupting for seven runs in the top of the third inning. Fulton fought back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 8-5, but the Spartans took control by piling on five runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

The Hornets - who also committed four errors - tacked on their final run in the sixth.

Fulton (2-10) has been outscored 61-22 in suffering four consecutive losses this week.

"It's definitely been difficult," Hornets head coach John Brinkmann said. "That's been a motto, trying to eliminate big innings, but we've struggled in following through with that."

Senior right fielder Solomon Huff was 2-for-4 with two runs batted and two runs scored to help spark Fulton's 11-hit attack Wednesday night. Sophomore shortstop Landon Dzurick finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run, while senior left fielder Nate Quick went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored once.

Junior starter Joe Hinchie took the loss for the Hornets, surrendering eight earned runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. Hinchie (0-2) struck out four and walked two.

Fulton hosts a North Central Missouri Conference game against Hannibal at 5 p.m. today. The Hornets will be looking to avenge an 11-1 loss to the Pirates on April 6 in Hannibal.

"I'm just trying to keep things positive - we've seen quite a few good things," Brinkmann said. "If we can string a solid seven innings together, we could be a pretty solid baseball team.

"We just have to keep grinding and try to get better every day."
