Track & Field: South Callaway boys advance to state meet in eight events

RUSSELLVILLE, Mo. - The South Callaway Bulldogs qualified for the Class 2 state championships in eight events and finished second as a team at the Sectional 2 championships Saturday.

New Bloomfield moved on to state in six events and followed South Callaway in third place.

The top four finishers in each event will compete Friday and Saturday in the Class 2 state championships at Jefferson City High School's Adkins Stadium.

Senior Bennett Hager, junior Landon Horstman and sophomore Wyatt Hager each won events Saturday as the Bulldogs compiled 73 points. Bennett Hager triumphed in the javelin with a throw of 156 feet, 11 inches, Horstman was victorious in the triple jump at 44-3 and Wyatt Hager prevailed in the pole vault at 12-6.

Wyatt Hager also took third in the javelin (133-1) and Bennett Hager came in fourth in the pole vault (11-6). Junior Hunter Schroer took second in the shot put (40-1) and was third in the discus (123-2) for South Callaway.

Junior Kaden Helsel finished third in the long jump (19-2 1/4) and junior Austin Meyer placed fourth in the high jump (5-8). Horstman, Helsel and Meyer also teamed with senior Andrew Buckner to take third in the 400 relay (:46.27).

New Bloomfield's quartet of senior Zain Culwell, juniors Payton Culwell and Clay Walker, and sophomore Bailey Crane won both the 800 and 1,600 relays with respective times of 1:32.57 and 3:29.63.

Peyton Culwell also triumphed in the 400 in :51.98 and came in second in the javelin at 151-10 as the Wildcats tallied 70 points. Walker took second in the 200 (:23.10) and Crane was fourth in the 400 (:53.34).

New Bloomfield's 400 relay of Walker, Crane, senior Bradley Roddy and junior Austin Carrier placed second (:45.88).
