Gaines, Fulton boys share third at Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY CITY, Mo. - Junior Mason Gaines won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters to help direct the Fulton Hornets to a third-place tie at the Montgomery County Early Season Invitational on Tuesday.

In the girls' division, junior Kate Pani took second in the long jump at 14 feet, 8 3/4 inches as Fulton ended up eighth as a team with 14 points. Montgomery County captured the team title with 164 points and Mark Twain came in second with 128.

Gaines won the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 53.87 seconds and triumphed in the 3,200 in 10:57 as the Hornets shared third place with Van-Far, both with 90 points. Paris secured the boys' team championship with 106 points and North Callaway was next in second place with 92.

Sophomore Quentin Ferguson finished second in the 400 in :59.19 for Fulton, while junior L'Trevion Kemp-Vaughn came in second in the triple jump at 39 feet, 11 inches. Junior Makygh Galbreath was second in the long jump at 17-11 1/4 and junior David Fague took second in the high jump at 5-4.

Junior Gabe Luebbert (11:40) and sophomore Zach Schwinke (12:02) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200. Sophomore John Cummings finished fourth in the shot put at 37-10.

Fulton competes at the Fayette Relays at 4 p.m. Friday, March 31.
