Baseball: South Callaway 3, Jamestown 2

MOKANE, Mo. - Junior first baseman Landon Horstman singled home sophomore left fielder Tyklen Salmons for the winning run with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning as the South Callaway Bulldogs rallied past the Jamestown Eagles on Tuesday night.

South Callaway - ranked No. 1 in Class 3 - overcame a 2-0 deficit to improve its season record to 3-1. The Bulldogs also triumphed despite being out-hit 7-4.

Jamestown jumped on top with single runs in the second and fourth, before South Callaway came up with a pair of runs in the fifth to tie the game. Sophomore third baseman Austin Loucks coaxed a leadoff walk and raced to second when sophomore second baseman Drake Davidson reached on a bunt single.

Both Loucks and Davidson moved up on junior center fielder Kaden Helsel's sacrifice and both scored when sophomore shortstop Peyton Leeper lined a single to center.

Salmons drew a one-out walk in the sixth and dashed to second on a failed pickoff attempt with Horstman at the plate. Horstman then drove a 1-1 pitch to right for a single, bringing home Salmons with the decisive run.

Davidson was 1-for-1, Salmons finished 1-for-2 and Horstman and Leeper were both 1-for-3 to account for South Callaway's hits.

"That's probably one of the better pitchers we're going to see this season," Bulldogs head coach Heath Lepper said. "We decided that what we were doing (at the plate) in the first four innings wasn't working and we changed gears.

"I'm proud of the boys for battling - they found a way to win."

Junior starter Dylan Lepper gave up two earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to post the win for the Bulldogs. Lepper struck out four and walked three.

Leeper needed just two pitches to get a double play in Jamestown's seventh to end the game and record the save.

South Callaway opens against host St. Francis Borgia in the Borgia Tournament at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Washington. The Bulldogs then face Union at 3:30.

On Saturday, South Callaway closes out pool play against Cape Girardeau Notre Dame at 11 a.m.

"We're excited to go up there and see some different teams, some bigger schools, and see how we can compete with those guys," Heath Lepper said.
