Girls' Basketball: Owensville 72, North Callaway 56

MOKANE, Mo. - The No. 4 seed North Callaway Ladybirds were outscored by the No. 8 Owensville Dutchgirls by a combined 36-20 in the second and third quarters of Wednesday's loss in the consolation semifinals of the South Callaway Tournament.

North Callaway (8-3) was in front 21-20 after one quarter, but Owensville outscored the Ladybirds 22-10 in the second quarter and carried a 42-31 advantage into halftime. The Dutchgirls then increased their lead to 56-41 by outscoring North Callaway 14-10 in the third quarter.

Junior guard Kyla Bertschinger finished with 15 points to steer four players in double figures for the Ladybirds. North Callaway suffered its second straight setback after having its six-game winning streak halted in a 67-39 first-round loss to No. 5 seed South Callaway on Monday night.

Sophomore guard Kenzie Ausfahl and junior forward Allie Schlueter chipped in with 12 points apiece for the Ladybirds on Wednesday night. Senior forward Sam Schaefer posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

"We did not do a good job on defense and we did not rebound well, so we lost," North Callaway head coach Morgan Beamer said.

Breanna Diestelkamp - who was 8-of-8 from the free-throw line - delivered 18 of her game-high 30 points in the first half to spark Owensville (4-7). Maddy Rowe also tallied 23 points.

The Ladybirds will face either No. 6 seed Russellville or No. 7 Montgomery County for seventh place at 4 p.m. today. The game will be played in the middle school.
