Vaughn powers Hornets to NCMC win over Boonville

Cameron Vaughn continues to be difficult to defend.

Fulton's junior forward responded with a game-high 31 points Tuesday night, carrying the Hornets to a 62-55 North Central Missouri Conference victory over Boonville at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.

Vaughn was a force on the interior with 24 points in the paint, according to Fulton head coach Justin Gilmore. Vaughn was coming off a 26-point outburst in the Hornets' 66-54 NCMC win at Hannibal on Dec. 27.

"Cam was great (Tuesday night) at getting into great scoring positions and finishing," Gilmore said. "Obviously, the other guys did an awesome job at getting him the ball in those great scoring positions.

"We got the ball inside and were scoring close to the basket."

Fulton was able to avenge a 69-58 loss at Boonville on Dec. 13, raising its season record to 6-2 and moving its NCMC mark to 4-1. The Hornets have won two in a row and four of their last five.

Senior forward Jared Peery also tallied 14 points Tuesday night for Fulton, which turned a slim 13-12 lead after one quarter into a 30-23 advantage at halftime. The Pirates pulled within 47-45 going to the fourth quarter, but the Hornets outscored Boonville 15-10 over the final 8 minutes to seal the victory.

"We executed to perfection and made them take the shots we wanted them to take," Gilmore said. "We made them shoot over us and then we boxed out and rebounded."

Ryan Beaver, Alec Adair and Nick Zeitlow posted 12 points apiece to pace the Pirates.

Fulton is off until next week's 81st-annual California Tournament. The Hornets open pool play against Fatima at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, and then face Southern Boone at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11.
