Boys' Basketball: Eugene 76, South Callaway 51

EUGENE, Mo. -The Eugene Eagles built a big lead in the early going in their Show-Me Conference romp over the South Callaway Bulldogs on Friday night.

South Callaway (9-15, 4-3 SMC) trailed Eugene 21-10 after the first quarter and faced a 43-23 deficit at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 20-18 in the third quarter, but still trailed 61-43.

"I really felt like our team competed and battled the entire game," South Callaway head coach Tony Brandt said. "They (Eagles) gave us some matchup problems that we really couldn't overcome. They are a very skilled offensive team and when teams like that can put four in double (figures), and have eight kids contribute on the offensive end, it makes it tough."

Junior guard Kaden Helsel eclipsed 1,000 career points with his game-high 26 points to guide the Bulldogs. Senior forward Bennett Hager recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Austin Engelbrecht directed the Eagles with 17 points, while Zach Bond scored 14. Tre Kempker and Jacob Adrian logged 12 points apiece.

South Callaway will be the No. 7 seed in the Class 3, District 9 Tournament at Blair Oaks this week. The Bulldogs play No. 2 seed Southern Boone - ranked No. 2 in the state - in a first-round game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
