Girls' varsity basketball: New Bloomfield 52, Wellsville 23

WELLSVILLE - Senior guard Madi Craighead responded with a game-high 21 points as the state-ranked Lady Wildcats manhandled the Lady Tigers in Thursday night's nonconference blitz.

New Bloomfield (5-1) - ranked No. 8 in Class 2 - owned a slim 11-10 edge after one quarter. The Lady Wildcats then broke the game open by outscoring Wellsville 19-1 in the second quarter to carry a 30-11 lead into halftime.

Junior center Samantha Haas added 10 points and 12 rebounds for New Bloomfield. Junior guard Parker Pitzen chipped in with nine points, all coming on three 3-pointers.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well, but I thought our defense was pretty good for most of the game," Lady Wildcats head coach Brett Craighead said. "We're getting more active, getting out on shooters.

"We're less passive than we were at the beginning of the season, showing more effort on the defensive end."

Allison Arens had 10 points for Wellsville.

New Bloomfield starts Show-Me Conference play at Russellville at 6 p.m. Monday. The Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Indians 58-41 in the championship of the Tipton Invitational Tournament last Saturday night.
