Girls' varsity basketball: Marshall 59, Fulton 18

MARSHALL - The Lady Hornets found themselves down 34-9 at halftime in dropping their North Central Missouri Conference opener to the Lady Owls on Thursday night.

Senior guard Shawnie Hempfield had five points and junior forward Destri Dungan contributed four for Fulton (1-4).

"It's still just the little things - taking care of the ball, blocking out," Lady Hornets head coach TJ Quick said. "It's obvious to me, as the head coach, that I haven't prepared them enough.

"We have to go back to the drawing board and have good practices Friday and Saturday."

Lyssa Acgalon and Taylor Crawford shared game scoring honors with 13 points apiece for Marshall. Kassidy Heying was next with 12 points.

The Lady Hornets lost the junior varsity game 46-14. Carly Fisher tallied six points and Sydney Hedgpath added five.

Fulton was coming off a 64-35 loss at Blair Oaks on Wednesday night. The Lady Hornets fell behind 24-8 after one quarter, trailed 45-17 at halftime and were down 55-28 to open the fourth quarter.

Hempfield topped Fulton with 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Alyssa Deuel finished with nine points and three rebounds.

"Overall, it was a tough night for our girls but we saw some adjustments during the game that tells us that we are learning," Quick said. " Our girls never stopped playing or working hard. They played till the time ran out."

Sydney Wilde sparked Blair Oaks with 12 points and Makenna Kliethermes added 11.

The Lady Hornets tumbled in the junior varsity game 45-7. Fisher produced a team-high seven points.

Fulton bowed in the freshman contest 41-28. Paige Clines had eight points and six rebounds, Hedgpath followed with six points and two rebounds, and Fisher accounted for five points and four rebounds.

The Lady Hornets play their home opener against NCMC foe Boonville at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.
