Gaines, Hornets sweep titles at Bowling Green Invite

BOWLING GREEN, Mo. - Fulton junior Mason Gaines locked up the individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 16.63 seconds in guiding the Hornets to the team championship at the Bowling Green Invitational on Friday.

In the varsity girls' division, North Callaway junior Reyna Schmauch secured individual honors in 20:04.07 as the Ladybirds came in second.

The New Bloomfield Wildcats finished fourth on the boys' side as sophomore Robert Morningstar medalled by taking 12th in 17:45.88.

Gaines was one of five medalists in the top 10 for Fulton, which compiled 23 points. Junior Nathan Quick placed fourth in 16:58.01, sophomore Brock Fisher was fifth in 17:00.03 , junior Gabe Luebbert came in sixth in 17:07.38 and senior Tanner Steffen finished seventh in 17:08.78.

Schmauch was one of three medalists for North Callaway, which totalled 42 points. Freshman Daelyn Schmauch earned fourth place in 20:45.65 and junior Kyla Bertschinger was ninth in 21:15.53.

Also placing for the Ladybirds were freshman Brianna Douglas (22nd, 23:16.36) and junior Brooke Fischer (32nd, 24:31.72).

Sophomore Bailey Crane also medalled for New Bloomfield, which recorded 122 points, by finishing 13th in 17:54.08. Junior Kyle Emerson was 24th for the Wildcats in 18:14.23, junior Payton Culwell placed 26th in 18:21.74 and freshman Wil Steele took 53rd in 19:14.40.

Fulton finished fourth in the girls' division with 100 points. Placing for the Lady Hornets were sophomore Mollie Huff (21st, 23:04.77), sophomore Mary Schnoebelen (26th, 23:54.48), junior Adrea Shadbolt (34th, 24:37.31), sophomore Anna Bonderer (38th, 24:55.61), and freshman Caitlin Sievert (51st, 25:53.05).

North Callaway scored 363 points to take 12th in the boys' division. Place-finishers for the Thunderbirds included sophomore Khobi Kellerman (35th, 18:37.09), sophomore Ean Rohrbach (77th, 20:52.12), sophomore Josh McCowan (80th, 20:57.41), junior Jared Bailey (115th, 23:10.27), and freshman Finnian Clark (121st, 24:35.19).

The New Bloomfield girls did not record a team score. Junior Kassi O'Dowd took 18th in 22:30.13, freshman Abbie Schattgen placed 28th in 24:08.18, freshman Kylie Quinn was 30th in 24:10.86 and freshman Alyssa Wills came in 39th in 24:59.31.

In the junior varsity boys' race, Fulton had three runners medal and scored 63 points to earn second place. Senior Jared Eliuk took second in 18:54.90, junior Cameron Peterson placed eighth in 19:56.96 and senior Brendan Dungan was 15th in 20:23.30.

Junior Tyler Hickerson also finished 22nd in 20:46.34 for the Hornets and sophomore Aaron Eliuk was 28th in 21:23.13.

New Bloomfield did not record a team score as freshman Easton Ambler finished 40th in 23:09.07.

All three schools now turn their attention toward district competition next Saturday. Fulton competes in the Class 3, District 5 championships at Helias in Jefferson City, North Callaway runs in the Class 2, District 3 championships at New Haven, and New Bloomfield competes in the Class 2, District 4 championships at Father Tolton in Columbia.
