College women's soccer: Gourley guides Lady Hornets to first victory

William Woods University sophomore forward McKenzie Gourley tallied both goals to spur the Lady Owls soccer team to its first win of the season over College of Saint Mary (Neb.) 2-0 in Saturday's home opener.

The game was moved to Westminster College because of wet field conditions at Firley Field.

Gourley scored off an assist by senior midfielder Alexis Willingham in the 25th minute, than quickly added an unassisted goal seconds later.

William Woods (1-2) outshot Saint Mary 20-11, including a decisive 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Flames (1-1) finished with a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Michyla Handley posted three saves to record the shutout for the Lady Owls.

William Woods plays at No. 5 Benedictine (Kan.) College at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
