College volleyball: Westminster finishes 1-2 at Washington tourney

ST. LOUIS - The Lady Blue Jays triumphed in only one of their three matches in the season-opening Washington University Invitational that concluded Saturday.

Westminster College kicked off tournament play Friday by splitting its two matches. The Lady Blue Jays swept North Park 25-21, 25-20 and 25-21, but were then swept by Cornell College 25-20, 25-20 and 25-17.

Hendrix (Ark.) College also swept Westminster 25-20, 25-9 and 25-13 on Saturday.

Senior setter Teresa Becker registered a total of 73 assists and 30 digs in being selected to the all-tournament team for the Lady Blue Jays. Freshman Eryka Wanyonyi combined for 23 kills and sophomore defensive specialist Erica Schrader accounted for 37 digs.

Westminster returns to St. Louis for a match against Washington at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10.
