College men's tennis: No. 10 William Woods rolls into NAIA second round

MOBILE, Ala. - The 10th-ranked Owls opened play at the 68th-annual NAIA national championships by throttling Midland (Nebraska) University 8-1 in first-round play Tuesday.

William Woods University (22-2) will square off against No. 6 Keiser (Florida) University in the second round at 9 this morning. Keiser (16-6) received a first-round bye.

No. 1 singles: freshman Antoine Maraval (WWU) defeated Jack Fryer (MU), 6-1, 6-4; No. 2: junior Aaron Westerlund (WWU) def. Conrad Mascarenhas (MU), 6-2, 6-2; No. 3: junior Sam Bird (WWU) def. Salvador Almeida (MU), 6-4, 6-3; No. 4: freshman Patrick Shelepov (WWU) def. Jaime Olarieta (MU), 6-0, 6-1; No. 5: Ryan Vitera (MU) def. sophomore Nathan Cooke (WWU), 6-0, 2-6, 6-3; No. 6: junior Juan Esteban Duran (WWU) def. Dylan Hatanelas (MU), 6-3, 6-1.

No. 1 doubles: senior Javier Callejo/Westerlund (WWU) def. Mascarenhas/Enrique Del Rio (MU), 8-0; No. 2: junior Zach Frisbie/junior Jesus Amezcua (WWU) def. Fryer/Hatanelas (MU), 8-3; No. 3: junior Oscar Barreiro/junior Christopher Vleeming Ortiz (WWU) def. Vitera/Almeida (MU), 8-2.

The sixth-ranked William Woods women received a first-round bye at the 39th-annual NAIA national championships in Mobile. The Lady Owls (15-6) face either No. 11 Lindsey Wilson (Kentucky) College or No. 22 University of Northwestern Ohio in the second round at 1 p.m. today.
