CAPE GIRARDEAU — The No. 18 William Woods University men's golf team, sparked by individual champion Logan Smith, captured its sixth straight American Midwest Conference title Tuesday at Dalhousie Golf Club.
William Woods secured an automatic berth in the 68th-annual NAIA national championships May 21-24 at Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.
The Owls locked up the AMC championship with a 5-over par 869 team total (288-292-289). William Woods finished 17 strokes in front of second-place Park University's 886 (296-297-293).
Smith — a sophomore — won the AMC individual title with a 2-under 214 (69-74-71). Sophomore Tom North finished in a two-way tie for fourth with a 2-over 218 (73-75-70) for the Owls, while sophomore Phillip Heller ended up in a two-way tie for sixth with a 4-over 220 (73-72-75).
Senior Tyler Fieser (76-75-73) and freshman Tom Doran (73-71-80) were in a three-way tie for 11th with a pair of 8-over 224s.
North was named to the all-AMC second team. Smith, Heller and Fieser were honorable-mention picks.
William Woods' Barry Doty was named AMC coach of the year.
