William Woods wins AMC women's golf championship

EUGENE - The William Woods Lady Owls golf team is headed to the NAIA National Championships for a 16th consecutive season.

William Woods finished with a two-round total of 617 at the American Midwest Conference Women's Golf Championships, which were held Monday and Tuesday at Redfield Golf Course. The Lady Owls shot a 312 in the first round and a 305 in the second.

William Woods trailed Lindenwood-Belleville by four strokes after the first round, and was down by three with nine holes to go. The Lady Owls shot a 153 on the final nine holes to rally past the Lady Lynx and win by seven strokes.

Freshman Maria Zrodowska won the AMC individual championship, shooting an even-par 144. Zrodowska opened with a 3-under 69 in the first round and shot a 75 in the second.

In addition to being named the AMC freshman of the year, Zrodowska was also honored as the AMC player of the year. In nine tournaments, she recorded seven top-10 finishes and four individual titles for the Lady Owls.

Junior Lucy Matthews came in sixth place in the tournament with a 156. She opened with an 83 but moved up six spots during the second round by shooting a 73.

Matthews joined Zrodowska on the All-AMC first team. They were joined by Columbia College's Mikala Jungmeyer and Freed-Hardeman's Brittany Meyers and Chloe Kraus.

Freshmen Krystal Burgtorf and Paige Hawkins also finished in the top 10, tying for eighth place with a 159. Burgtorf carded an 81 in her first round and a 78 in the second, while Hawkins opened with a 79 in the first round and an 80 in the second.

Burgtorf was selected to the All-AMC honorable mention team.

Senior Kelsey Moreland tied for 23rd place with a 176, shooting a 97 in the first round and bouncing back with a 79 in the second round.

Moreland was William Woods' honoree on the AMC Champions of Character team.

William Woods will compete as a team in the NAIA National Championships, which take place May 14-17 at Oklahoma City.
