College baseball: William Woods 9-9, Lincoln Christian (Ill.) 4-0

Junior starter Tristan Steffens allowed only one hit and struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings in the second game as the Owls completed a sweep of the Red Lions in Tuesday's doubleheader at Backer Sports Complex.

William Woods University - piling up 22 total hits in the doubleheader - improved to 9-18 on the season. Lincoln Christian University dropped to 2-11.

Steffens - a Fulton graduate - earned his first win of the season to even his record at 1-1.

Senior first baseman Quincy Jones went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored two runs as the Owls accumulated 11 hits in the second game.

Freshman right fielder Isaiah Gibbs finished 1-for-2 with a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored for William Woods. Senior center fielder Tyler Bracht was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Junior left fielder Trevor Garriott went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and senior designated hitter Marquise Doherty finished 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and scored a run.

Bracht was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Owls also produced 11 hits in the opener. Gibbs finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored a run, while Doherty went 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

Junior catcher Tim Redford was 0-for-2 but had two RBI and scored a run.

William Woods senior starter Adam Grunden scattered four hits over four shutout innings to secure his first victory of the season. Grunden (1-1) struck out four and walked one.

The Owls return to American Midwest Conference play with a three-game series at Hannibal-LaGrange University, starting with a single contest at 1 p.m. Friday. The two teams then square off in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
