College softball: Lady Owls split AMC doubleheader with No. 18 Lyon

William Woods University senior center fielder Emma Walker had two hits, including a triple, and drove in a run as the Lady Owls edged No. 18 Lyon (Arkansas) College 3-2 in the opener of an AMC home doubleheader Sunday.

William Woods finished in a split with Lyon after dropping the second game 3-0 at Backer Sports Complex. The Lady Owls are now 6-13 on the season and 1-3 in the American Midwest Conference.

Lyon jumped on top in the first game by tallying both of its runs in the top of the first inning. William Woods countered with its three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.

Walker went 2-for-3 and also scored a run as the Lady Owls collected six hits. Sophomore third baseman Celeste Sermeno and senior second baseman Emily Robinett were both 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Junior left fielder Anna Counts finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

William Woods junior starter Madison Ausfahl - a North Callaway graduate - picked up the complete-game win. Ausfahl (3-6) allowed two earned runs while scattering six hits, issued five walks and struck out four.

The Lady Owls managed only two hits in being shut out in the second game. Sophomore right fielder Lindy Wilson singled in the third and senior first baseman Alli Massey singled in the sixth.

Junior starter Brittany Roady went 6 1/3 innings in suffering the loss for William Woods. Roady (3-5) gave up three runs - two earned - on nine hits, struck out five and walked one.

The Lady Owls were swept by Central Baptist (Arkansas) College in an AMC home doubleheader Saturday. William Woods bowed in the opener 7-3 and lost the second game 8-3.

Junior designated player Regan Wilde was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored a run as the Lady Owls totalled 10 hits in the first game. Senior shortstop Ari Arnold also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Ausfahl went the distance in being tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs - only four earned - on 10 hits. She had five strikeouts and four walks.

Arnold finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, an RBI and scored two runs as William Woods was limited to six hits in the second game. Massey was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Roady threw 6 2/3 innings in taking the loss, allowing eight runs - five earned - on nine hits. She struck out six and walked five.

The Lady Owls continue their homestand with an AMC doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange University at 2 p.m. today.
