College men's tennis: William Woods 5, Cumberland (Tenn.) 3

LEBANON, Tenn. - The fourth-ranked Owls stayed unbeaten at 5-0 by fending off the No. 14 Phoenix on Saturday.

No. 1 singles: senior Javier Callejo (WWU) defeated Pau Grabuleda Cruaas (CU), 6-4, 7-6 (2); No. 2: Ramon Puertolas (CU) def. junior Christopher Vleeming Ortiz (WWU), 6-2, 6-1; No. 3: junior Oscar Barreiro (WWU) def. Axel Lucich (CU), 6-3, 6-3; No. 4: Francisco Fernandez Meaca (CU) def. junior Aaron Westerland (WWU), 6-4, 6-4; No. 5: junior Sam Bird (WWU) def. Aleja Bagnera (CU), 6-4, 6-1; No. 6: Guillermo Pardos (CU) vs. freshman Antoine Maraval (WWU), 3-6, 1-2 (did not finish).

No. 1 doubles: Westerland/Barreiro (WWU) def. Lopes/Lucich (CU), 8-1; No. 2: Callejo/Vleeming Ortiz (WWU) def. Pardos/Bagnera (CU), 8-2; No. 3: Fernandez Meaca/Grabuleda Cruaas (CU) def. junior Zach Frisbie/junior Juan Esteban Duran (WWU), 9-7.

William Woods University launched its trip to Tennessee with a 9-0 win over American Midwest Conference opponent Freed-Hardeman University last Friday.

The Owls host William Jewell College at 3 p.m. today at the Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex.
