No. 5 WWU men's tennis team downs Emporia State 7-1

The fifth-ranked William Woods University men's tennis team stayed unbeaten at 3-0 with a convincing 7-1 win over NCAA Division II Emporia State (Kansas) University on Tuesday at the Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex.

No. 1 singles: senior Javier Callejo (WWU) defeated Charles Gortzounian (ESU), 6-3, 5-7, 10-4; No. 2: junior Christopher Vleeming Ortiz (WWU) def. Oliver Dixon (ESU), 6-3, 6-1; No. 3: junior Oscar Barreiro (WWU) def. Gerald Pont (ESU), 6-4, 6-4; No. 4: junior Aaron Westerland (WWU) def. Taylor Nelson (ESU), 6-3, 6-2; No. 5: Lukas Winker (ESU) vs. junior Sam Bird (WWU), 5-4 (unfinished); No. 6: freshman Antoine Maraval (WWU) def. Luiz Maia (ESU), 6-2, 6-2.

No. 1 doubles: Westerland/Barreiro (WWU) def. Dixon/Pont (ESU), 8-5; No. 2: Callejo/Ortiz (WWU) def. Nelson/Gortzounian (ESU), 8-6; No. 3: Winkler/Andy Graf (ESU) def. junior Juan Duran/junior Zach Frisbie (WWU), 6-2, 6-2.

The Owls' scheduled home match today against Division II Northwest Missouri State University has been postponed due to possible rain.

William Woods goes to Tennessee for matches against American Midwest Conference opponent Freed-Hardeman University at 1:30 p.m. Friday and No. 7 Cumberland University at 10 a.m. Saturday.
