College cross country: William Woods men, women both selected second in AMC

The Owls and Lady Owls were both picked to finish second in the American Midwest Conference this season, respectively, in the preseason coaches' polls released Wednesday.

The William Woods University men accumulated 90 points and one first-place vote. The William Woods women tallied 95 points.

The Owls took second place in the AMC championships in 2018 and junior twins Schuyler and Nathaniel Ogden qualified for the NAIA national championships. Schuyler and Nathaniel Ogden, and fellow junior Ben Farrell were all named to the all-AMC team.

"With only losing a couple of seniors, it will be great to see most of our top performers back," William Woods head coach Dan Schwab said. "Having two returners with national experience and another coming off of an all-conference performance will help our depth this year."

The Lady Owls came in third at last year's AMC championships and sophomores Whitneigh Drown and Alicia Engelbrecht, and junior Harley Nale all advanced to the national championships.

Drown, Engelbrecht and Nale were selected to the all-AMC squad.

"I'm very excited with the number of national qualifier returners we have," Schwab said. "The high-caliber meet experience that four women returners bring back this year will be fun to watch."

Both William Woods teams start their season in the Southwest Baptist University Bearcat Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7, in Bolivar.
