College Baseball: Westminster drops two against Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Spalding (Ky.) Golden Eagles rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in the second game to complete a sweep of the Westminster Blue Jays in Saturday's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Westminster is now 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the SLIAC. Spalding improved to 21-7 on the season and 11-1 in the SLIAC.

The Blue Jays - who had taken an 8-7 lead in the nightcap with three runs in the top of the seventh - out-hit the Golden Eagles 12-9. Senior designated hitter Ryan Klimkiewicz went 1-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in, while junior center fielder Zach Eisenreich finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and scored three runs.

Sophomore first baseman Ryan Clavin was also 2-for-6 with two RBI for Westminster. Junior left fielder Will Stonecipher went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run.

Sophomore Braden Beasley worked 3 innings in relief of senior starter Alex Dickneite to take the loss for the Blue Jays. Beasley (1-3) gave up two earned runs on three hits, struck out three and walked one.

In the first game, freshman third baseman Hayden Hirschvogel finished 2-for-3 with three RBI as Westminster totalled nine hits. Junior catcher Branden Beeler was 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored three times, while Clavin went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Freshman Ethan Rackers threw five innings in relief of sophomore starter Skyler Dickneite in suffering the loss for the Blue Jays. Rackers (1-1) allowed three earned runs on just one hit and issued three walks.

Westminster travels to Blackburn (Ill.) College for a SLIAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
