Women's basketball: Lady Owls roll to win in opener

William Woods University junior guard Peyton Greenlee connected for a game-high 25 points to spur the Lady Owls to a commanding 76-52 win over Lincoln (Illinois) College in Wednesday night's season opener at Anderson Arena.

William Woods started the game with an 11-2 run and freshman forward Katie French's basket in the paint with 1 minute, 27 seconds left gave the Lady Owls an 18-10 advantage after one quarter.

Lincoln (0-2) answered with a 10-5 run to close within 23-20 at the 5:59 mark of the second quarter. William Woods, though, countered with a 13-5 run to build a double-digit lead at halftime.

Junior guard Jazlyn Drake hit a shot in the lane with :31 to play, sending the Lady Owls into the break with a 36-25 edge.

William Woods pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Lynx 22-13 to widen its lead to 58-38.

Greenlee made 7-of-13 shots - including 5-of-9 from 3-point range - and hit all six of her free throws to guide three players in double figures for the Lady Owls. Junior guard Kaycee Gerald added 14 points and senior forward Sommer Burgard contributed 10 as William Woods shot 44 percent (29-of-66) from the field.

Gerald finished with a game-high seven assists and also collected a team-high eight rebounds as the Lady Owls edged the Lady Lynx 46-44 on the boards.

Emoni Smith was the only player to reach double figures for Lincoln, tallying 17 points. The Lady Lynx shot a dreadful 25 percent (16-of-64) as a team and committed 24 turnovers.

William Woods plays Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) University in the Columbia College Cougars vs. Cancer Classic at 1 p.m. Saturday.
