College Track: AMC Championships

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Four area athletes received first-team all-conference honors at the American Midwest Conference track and field championships held Friday and Saturday at Greenville University.

William Woods senior Madelyn Scrivner (Eldon High School) took first place in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 164 feet, 11 inches, which is an automatic-qualifying mark for the NAIA track and field national championships. Scrivner won the event by 22 feet.

Scrivner also received all-conference honors in the discus, taking second place with a throw of 117-7. She took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 40-7, a new William Woods record, and she finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 101-6.

William Woods freshman Naomi Kerkula (Jefferson City High School) and junior Justice Miller (Russellville High School) helped the Owls to a first-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay, clocking a time of 50.03 seconds.

Kerkula earned all-conference honors in three events. She, along with freshman Harley Nale (Linn High School), helped William Woods to a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:06.22. Kerkula also placed third in the 100-meter dash in 12.82 seconds and finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.91 seconds.

Miller placed 13th in the 100 with a time of 13.63 seconds.

Columbia College senior Grace Young (Russellville High School) is the fourth area champion. She finished first in the women's 10,000-meter run with a time of 40:08.00, winning by 29 seconds.

In addition to the 4x400, Nale received all-conference honors in 800-meter dash, taking third place with a time of 2:26.95. She also finished fourth with the Owls' 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:52.73.

Three area athletes narrowly missed AMC all-conference recognition.

William Woods junior Cassidy Roling (Helias High School) took fourth in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 139-9. She also placed 14th in the discus with a toss of 96-4.

William Woods sophomore Damian Miller (Russellville High School) finished fourth in the men's pole vault, clearing a height of 12-3.5.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy senior Katleyn Huhn (Fatima High School) also took fourth in the women's pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-5.5.

Williams Baptist freshman Jacob Whittle (Eldon High School) scored points for the Eagles in three events. He placed fifth in the 400 (50.97 seconds) and took sixth in the 200 (23.39). Whittle was also on Williams Baptist's 4x100 relay, which finished fifth in 44.08 seconds.

Columbia College freshman Alex Krieg (Fatima High School) recorded a pair of top-eight finishes. He took fifth place in 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:04.32. He also finished eighth in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:14.88.

William Woods freshman Hunter Carpenter (California High School) helped the Owls' 4x800-meter relay to a sixth-place finish in a time of 8:46.52. He also placed 14th in the 1,500-meter run in 4:21.00.

William Woods sophomore Charlie Schattgen (New Bloomfield High School) took 12th place in the men's 10,000 in 36:02.00, while sophomore teammate Matt Fringer (Russellville High School) was 14th in 37:05.00. Schattgen also finished 17th in the 5,000 with a time of 17:41.35.

William Woods freshman Shaley Eichholz (Eugene High School) came in 12th place in the women's 5,000 with a time of 23:05.90.

Columbia College swept the conference championships in the team standings, posting 234 points on the men's side and 182 points on the women's side.

The Hannibal-LaGrange men were a distant second with 140 points, while the William Woods women kept it close, finishing with 173 points in the standings.
