Western Illinois throttles Lady Owls in exhibition

William Woods opens AMC play tonight

MACOMB, Ill. - The William Woods University Lady Owls were outscored by a combined 52-22 in the second and fourth quarters, falling to NCAA Division I Western Illinois in a 96-57 exhibition loss Tuesday night.

William Woods was only down 16-13 after one quarter, but Western Illinois outscored the Lady Owls 27-11 in the second quarter to widen its advantage to 43-24 at halftime. The Leathernecks owned a 71-46 lead after three quarters and outscored William Woods 25-11 over the final 10 minutes in cruising to the commanding victory.

Sophomore guard Peyton Greenlee finished with 12 points to pace the Lady Owls, who shot just 38 percent (22-of-58) from the field. Junior guard Bailey Rollins - who made 4-of-7 shots, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range - contributed 10 points.

Senior forward Hannah Bland collected a game-high nine rebounds and sophomore guard Kaycee Gerald added eight to direct William Woods to a decisive 47-29 edge on the boards.

Taylor Hanneman - who was 5-of-8 from behind the arc - tallied a game-high 20 points to guide four players in double figures for Western Illinois (3-0). The Leathernecks shot 51 percent (33-of-65) from the field, including 47 percent (16-of-34) on 3-pointers.

Michelle Farrow followed with 18 points for Western Illinois, while Emily Clemens and Taylor Higginbotham both provided 10. The Leathernecks scored 43 points off the Lady Owls' 37 turnovers.

William Woods (2-3) returns home to start American Midwest Conference play against Stephens College at 7 tonight at Anderson Arena.
