College Baseball: Williams Woods splits doubleheader with Park University

PARKVILLE, Mo. - Freshman left fielder Trevor Garriott delivered two hits and drove in three runs as the WWU Owls picked apart the Park University Pirates 14-0 in the first game of Sunday's AMC doubleheader.

William Woods University came away with a split after managing only one run on seven hits and committing three errors in dropping the second game by 1-7. The Owls (13-18, 9-6 American Midwest Conference) took the series by rolling to a 15-7 triumph over Park (16-9, 9-3) last Thursday afternoon.

William Woods broke out for 18 hits in Sunday's opener, tallying a run in the top of the first inning and then piling on five runs in the third. The Owls tacked on four more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to finish off their outburst.

Garriott went 2-for-3 with a three-run triple in the fifth and also scored a run to spark William Woods' rampage. Junior first baseman Tyler Cunningham finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while sophomore center fielder Tyler Bracht was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and scored once.

Junior shortstop Glen DesBouillons went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Owls, while senior starter Ryan Phillips finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Phillips posted the victory and combined with two relievers to shut out the Pirates on five hits. Phillips (6-2) allowed four hits, struck out three and walked none.

William Woods - already trailing 6-0 in the nightcap - manufactured its lone run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by senior designated hitter Konrad Kemper, a South Callaway graduate.

DesBouillons went 2-for-4 with a double to pace the Owls.

William Woods junior starter Ryan Furtney was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs - only one earned - on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Furtney (2-4) recorded three strikeouts and walked none.

The Owls play a doubleheader against Morthland (Illinois) College at 1 p.m. today, but the games have been moved to GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. William Woods' scheduled home game Wednesday against College of the Ozarks has also been postponed and the two teams will now play a doubleheader Wednesday, April 19, in Fulton.
