College Baseball: Avila 10, William Woods 1

The WWU Owls could muster just four hits in being manhandled by the visiting Avila Eagles in Wednesday night's non-conference loss.

Already trailing 6-0, William Woods University (11-17) produced its lone run - without the benefit of any hits - in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior center fielder Matt Priest reached on a one-out error, raced all the way to third when senior third baseman Jansen Smith was also safe on an error, and then scored on a wild pitch.

Avila University (13-14) tacked on a run in the sixth and added three more in the seventh to seal the victory.

Senior left fielder Alex St. Pierre and junior right fielder Nolan Aherin both finished 1-for-3 for the Owls. Senior catcher Konrad Kemper - a South Callaway graduate - and junior first baseman Tyler Cunningham were each 1-for-4.

Junior starter Dany Paradis-Giroux lasted only 4 1/3 innings in taking the loss for William Woods. Paradis-Giroux gave up four earned runs on five hits, struck out three and issued three walks.

With rain in the forecast Friday and Saturday, the Owls have shifted around the schedule for their American Midwest Conference series at Park University. The two teams will play one game at 2:30 p.m. today and then a doubleheader Sunday.
