Softball: Westminster splits doubleheader with Guilford (N.C.)

LITTLE RIVER, N.C. - The Westminster Lady Blue Jays split a doubleheader, losing 4-12 and winning 11-7, with the Lady Quakers at the Fastpitch Dreams Beach Classic on Sunday.

Westminster College put up two runs in both the first and sixth innings as it finished with eight hits in the first game. Guilford logged four runs in the first, added one more in the fifth, piled on five in the sixth and scored two in the seventh.

Senior designated player Erica Burney finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in for the Lady Blue Jays, while freshman first baseman Josie Cotter was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Freshman center fielder Callie Collier also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Freshman starter Mackenzie Myers didn't make it out of the first inning in being pinned with the loss for Westminster. Myers (0-1) allowed four earned runs on two hits and walked two.

Burney followed up by going 3-for-4 with three RBI to spark the Lady Blue Jays' 14-hit outburst in the second game. Westminster broke a 7-all tie by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh.

Collier also went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice for the Lady Blue Jays, while junior left fielder Amber Tepen was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Cotter finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while sophomore catcher Jordan Thomure went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run.

Freshman Lexi Knisley pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Myers to pick up her first victory of the season for Westminster. Knisley (1-2) scattered four hits, struck out one and issued a walk.

After taking Monday off, the Lady Blue Jays (5-9) wrap up play in the Classic with a doubleheader today against St. Joseph (Conn.).
