Softball: Westminster goes 1-1 to start spring break trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Westminster Lady Blue Jays whipped Wisconsin-Stout 10-2 to begin play Saturday at the Fastpitch Dreams Beach Classic, but then the Lady Blue Devils returned the favor with a 12-0 dismantling in the second game.

The split left Westminster College at 4-8 on the season.

Senior Erica Burney finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored to pace the Lady Blue Jays in their opening win. Freshman Mackenzie Myers went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored twice, while freshman Josie Cotter drove in a run and also scored.

Freshman Katie Price threw a three-hitter to pick up her first collegiate victory, giving up two earned runs while striking out three.

Burney, Cotter, senior Anne Baker and junior Amber Tepen each had hits for Westminster in the second game, while freshman Lexi Knisley gave up four earned runs in taking the loss. Errors by the Lady Blue Jays led to seven unearned runs.

"I'm pleased with the performance in game one, but we had too many errors and a lack of focus in game two," Westminster head coach Joe Henderson said. "In general, it was a good start to the Classic."

The Lady Blue Jays continue play Sunday with a doubleheader against Guilford (N.C.) College.
