Baseball: Lyon (Ark.) 6, William Woods 5

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon Scots scored the winning run on a walk-off sacrifice fly to hand the WWU Owls a loss in their American Midwest Conference opener Friday.

William Woods University (4-10) scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-all. Senior left fielder Alex St. Pierre scored on senior designated hitter Jalen Poindexter's two-out single to right. Junior right fielder Nolan Aherin followed with a single to right, scoring senior second baseman Ryan Phillips.

Keegan Floyd led off the bottom of the ninth for Lyon (6-7) by reaching on an error by junior shortstop Glen DesBouillons. Floyd advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Sauceda and Dalton Ernest entered the game as a pinch-runner.

Ernest moved to third on a one-out single to right by Logan Reddick and the Owls walked Reese Chovanec to load the bases. In the next at-bat, Tyler Houston flied out to right to send Ernest home with the decisive run.

Lyon took a 4-0 lead after it scored a run in the first and three in the third. William Woods produced three runs in the fifth. The Scots came up with a run in the seventh to make the score 5-3.

DesBouillons was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run batted in as the Owls collected eight hits. Aherin went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Phillips was 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Junior reliever Ryan Schmidt (0-2) - who replaced junior starter Ryan Furtney - took the loss for the Owls, who committed four errors. Schmidt allowed an unearned run on one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.

Furtney allowed five runs - only one earned - on five hits and struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings.
