William Woods drops two baseball games on first day of Joplin Tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. - The WWU Owls were doomed by a lack of offense in their pair of opening losses at the Joplin Tournament on Friday.

William Penn (Iowa) starter Felipe Hernandez threw a no-hitter in the first game as the Statesmen defeated the Owls 10-0. William Woods University (2-8) dropped the second game 3-1 to the Graceland (Iowa) University Yellowjackets.

In the first game, Hernandez struck out four and walked one.

The Statesmen scored six runs in the first inning, two in the third and two in the fifth.

Junior starter Ryan Furtney (1-1) took the loss for the Owls. In 1/3 inning, Furtney allowed six earned runs on seven hits and did not record a walk or strikeout.

In the second game, William Woods took a 1-0 lead in the third when junior right fielder Patrick Dillon scored junior left fielder Nolan Aherin from third on a one-out infield single.

Graceland produced three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead.

Dillon was 2-for-4 with an run batted in as William Woods collected five hits. Aherin went 2-for-3 and senior catcher Konrad Kemper - a South Callaway graduate - was 1-for-3 with a double.

Senior reliever Dalton Christian (0-1) took the loss for the Owls. In 1/3 inning of relief for junior starter Chase Feucht, Christian allowed three earned runs on three hits and struck out one.

Feucht allowed one hit, struck out eight and walked two in six innings.

The Owls play their final game of the tournament against Viterbo (Wisconsin) University at 11 a.m. Sunday in Carl Junction.
