Men's basketball: William Woods 79, Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 74

The Owls halted a three-game American Midwest Conference losing streak by holding off the Lions on Saturday at Anderson Arena.

William Woods University - coming off a 77-62 AMC home loss to Williams Baptist (Arkansas) College on Thursday night - climbed back to the .500 mark at 12-12 overall and improved to 9-7 in conference play. The Owls had previously won at Freed-Hardeman 67-64 on Dec. 16.

The Lions - who had been energized by a 94-89 overtime upset at No. 3 Columbia College on Thursday night - fell to 9-15 on the season and 6-10 in the AMC.

Senior guard DaShaun Stark hit 10-of-16 shots - including 2-of-6 from 3-point range - and made 7-of-9 free throws to direct William Woods with a game-high 29 points Saturday. Senior forwards Darrien Dickey and Brandon Vice logged 18 and 15 points, respectively, for the Owls, who shot 46 percent (26-of-56) as a team.

Dickey and Stark also completed double-doubles with a game-high 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively, to carry William Woods to a 45-37 advantage on the boards.

Kortland Martin was 6-of-12 from the field - burying 6-of-11 3s - to spark Freed-Hardeman with 23 points. James Davis followed with 16 points for the Lions, who shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field.

The Owls go to St. Louis for an AMC matchup against Harris-Stowe State University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. William Woods will seek to avenge an 84-74 loss to Harris-Stowe on Dec. 28.
