Lady Owls' fourth-quarter surge stifles Harris-Stowe 67-56

The William Woods University Lady Owls outscored Harris-Stowe State University 16-5 over the final 4:31 to take control in a 67-56 AMC victory over the Lady Hornets on Thursday night at Anderson Arena.

William Woods (7-5, 5-2 American Midwest Conference) trailed 44-40 to start the fourth quarter, but pulled away by outscoring Harris-Stowe 27-12 in the last 10 minutes. The Lady Owls tied the game at 51-all when senior forward Hannah Bland made two free throws with 5:09 to play.

Bland then put William Woods in front to stay with a basket on its next possession with 4:31 remaining. Bland - who was 9-of-13 from the field and 7-of-10 at the foul line - tallied a game-high 25 points to direct three players in double figures for the Lady Owls.

William Woods was down 12-10 after one quarter and trailed by six points early in the second quarter. The Lady Owls, though, countered with an 11-0 run to build a 21-16 edge on a basket in the paint from Bland with 2:38 to play in the first half.

The Lady Hornets narrowed their deficit to 24-23 at halftime, but William Woods extended its lead to 33-27 when senior guard Jasmine Brown scored in the lane with 5:28 left in the third quarter.

Harris-Stowe responded with a 9-0 run to go in front 36-33 on Amani Ferguson's 3-pointer at the 4:10 mark, and the Lady Hornets owned a four-point lead going to the fourth quarter.

Sophomore guard Peyton Greenlee came off the bench to add 12 points for William Woods, which shot 45 percent (22-of-49) from the field and 73 percent (19-of-26) at the line. Brown supplied 10 points as the Lady Owls overcame 20 turnovers.

Bland completed a double-double by collecting a game-high 12 rebounds to give William Woods a slight 41-40 advantage on the boards.

Jordan May logged 13 points as the only player to reach double figures for Harris-Stowe (5-7, 3-3). The Lady Hornets shot just 31 percent (23-of-74) as a team.

The Lady Owls play an exhibition game at NCAA Division II Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
