College Baseball: Westminster sweeps MacMurray (Ill.)

Senior designated hitter Ryan Gvillo's two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in Sunday's nightcap helped the Blue Jays win 6-5, completing a sweep of the MacMurray Highlanders at Saucier Field.

Westminster College prevailed in the first game 5-4 when junior second baseman Blake Strebler's walk-off sacrifice fly capped off a two-run comeback in the seventh.

The Blue Jays pushed their winning streak to four games, improving to 16-8 on the season and 11-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Westminster trailed 2-0 in the second game when senior right fielder Tanner Branneky's solo homer in the fourth put the Blue Jays on the scoreboard. MacMurray College increased its lead with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Westminster answered with three runs in the sixth to pull even at 4-all.

The Highlanders went back on top with a run in the seventh, setting the stage for Gvillo's go-ahead home run.

Branneky went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and scored three times as the Blue Jays accumulated 10 hits. Gvillo was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

Senior Justin Riggins - working the final four innings in relief of freshman starter Sam Huesgen - picked up the win for Westminster. Riggins (2-0) allowed an earned run on two hits and struck out two.

The Blue Jays were in front 3-2 in the opener when MacMurray came up with two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Westminster tied it in the bottom of the inning on junior center fielder Nick Bohlmann's RBI single and Strebler's sacrifice fly brought home junior shortstop Adam Mundle with the decisive run.

Branneky finished 3-for-3 with a solo homer in the second and scored twice as the Blue Jays ended up with 10 hits. Mundle went 2-for-3 with one run scored and Strebler was 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored once.

Sophomore starter Alex Dickneite went the distance to post the win for Westminster. Dickneite (6-2) gave up four earned runs on six hits, struck out five and walked one.

The Blue Jays start a three-game SLIAC series against Webster University with a noon doubleheader Saturday at Saucier Field. The two teams will then play a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday in St. Louis.
