College Baseball: William Woods 10, Hannibal-LaGrange 7

HANNIBAL, Mo. - Junior first baseman Tyler Cunningham had two hits and three runs batted in as the WWU Owls fended off the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans in Saturday's American Midwest Conference victory.

William Woods University (24-26, 16-11 AMC) took the three-game series after sweeping Hannibal-LaGrange University in Friday's doubleheader. The Trojans tumbled to 6-39 on the season and 0-27 in the AMC.

The Owls broke on top with two runs in the top of the first inning Saturday, but Hannibal-LaGrange answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 advantage. William Woods regained the lead with three runs in the fourth and the Trojans tacked on a run in their half of the inning to pull within 5-4.

The Owls, though, gained control by producing two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the ninth to open up a 10-4 lead. Hannibal-LaGrange added two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Cunningham was 3-for-5 with a double and scored a run as William Woods was out-hit 17-13 but capitalized on seven errors by the Trojans. Junior shortstop Glen DesBouillons finished 3-for-6 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore center fielder Tyler Bracht went 1-for-3 with three RBI and scored twice.

Senior starter Ryan Phillips worked five innings to claim the win for the Owls. Phillips (8-3) gave up four runs - only one earned - on eight hits, struck out six and walked one.

William Woods stopped a three-game losing streak by sweeping Hannibal-LaGrange in Friday's doubleheader. The Owls won the opener 8-0 and prevailed in the second game 10-4.

William Woods was clinging to a 1-0 edge in the first game before erupting for seven runs in the seventh. DesBouillons and Phillips both delivered two-run singles to highlight the inning.

Senior designated hitter Konrad Kemper - a South Callaway graduate - finished 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored as the Owls collected 11 hits. DesBouillons was 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice, while senior right fielder Matt Priest went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Phillips - playing second base - finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run.

Senior starter Ryan Schmidt picked up the victory for William Woods, throwing 4 1/3 scoreless innings while scattering four hits. Schmidt (2-4) struck out two and issued two walks.

Junior Ryan Furtney worked the last 2 2/3 innings to complete the shutout and record his first save of the season. Furtney gave up three hits and struck out three.

Priest - playing left field - and Bracht were both 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored to help fuel the Owls' 16-hit rampage in the nightcap. William Woods put up two runs in the second, one each in the third and fourth, four in the fifth and two in the eighth.

Cunningham finished 4-for-5 and scored three times for the Owls, while senior third baseman Jansen Smith was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Kemper went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Junior starter Chase Feucht worked seven innings to earn the win for William Woods. Feucht (5-4) allowed three runs - two earned - on 10 hits, struck out six and walked two.

The Owls travel to Culver-Stockton College for a non-conference game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
