Blue Jays drop UMAC game to MacMurray

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Westminster Blue Jays football team gave up a late score that resulted in a 17-10 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference loss to the MacMurray Highlanders on Saturday.

Tied 10-all in the fourth quarter, MacMurray quarterback Coy Dorothy threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brandon Staves. Grant Kicker knocked in the point-after to make the score 17-10 in favor of the Highlanders (2-1, 1-1 UMAC) with 2 minutes, 55 seconds left in the game.

Dorothy finished with 217 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions on 16-of-26 passing. Staves had a game-high 111 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions.

MacMurray took a 7-0 lead with 10:03 left in the first quarter when Dorothy found Staves for a 24-yard score and Kicker added on the extra point.

Westminster (1-2, 1-1) scored its first points when senior kicker Ian Pletenik made a 25-yard field goal with 1:58 remaining in the first.

The Blue Jays took the lead in the second when junior quarterback Trent White ran in a 2-yard score. Pletenik tacked on the extra point to make the score 10-7 in favor of Westminster with 11:06 left in the half. The Blue Jays took that lead into halftime.

White had a team-high 92 yards on 15 carries. He also had 269 yards on 26-of-48 passing, as Westminster finished with 417 yards of total offense.

MacMurray tied the game at 10-all when Kicker made a 28-yard field goal with 11:06 left in the third.

The Blue Jays host a UMAC game against Greenville at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Panthers (0-3, 0-2) lost a UMAC home game 40-37 to Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday.
