CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — It was a very productive third quarter for the Missouri women's basketball team.
The Tigers outscored the Illinois Fighting Illini 24-5 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Missouri turned a narrow 1-point halftime lead into a comfortable 67-45 win Friday afternoon, improving their record to 4-0 on the road this season.
Missouri went on a 17-0 run during the third quarter, starting with a 3-pointer by Lauren Aldridge. The Tigers made four 3s during the run, two each by Aldridge and Sophie Cunningham.
Amber Smith and Akira Levy each added a fast-break layup during that stretch. Levy made 1-of-2 free throws with about two minutes left in the third, capping the run and extending Missouri's lead to 47-28.
The Tigers led 51-31 at the end of the third and were ahead by as many as 28 points (61-33) in the fourth quarter.
Missouri made 5-of-9 3-point attempts in the third quarter and was 5-of-21 beyond the arc in the other three quarters. Illinois was just 2-of-14 from 3-point range.
The Tigers led 16-13 after one quarter and 27-26 at halftime.
Smith finished a rebound shy of a double-double, leading Missouri with 16 points and nine rebounds. She was also one of three Tigers with three assists.
Levy came off the bench to score 14 points, while Aldridge added 11 points. Cunningham finished with nine points, all from 3-point range in the third quarter.
Alex Wittinger led Illinois (8-3) with 15 points.
Missouri (10-3) wraps up non-conference play Sunday, Dec. 30, against Arkansas State at Mizzou Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
