MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — It was a day for Amber Smith and the Missouri defense.
Smith, a junior, recorded career-highs in points with 28 and rebounds with 13 on Sunday as the Missouri women defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 68-51 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
The 51 points are a season-low for West Virginia, ranked No. 21. Its previous low was 78 in a win against Coppin State.
Missouri led 20-17 after one quarter then used a 14-6 edge in the second quarter to take a 34-23 advantage into halftime. The Tigers led 49-38 after three quarters. Missouri's biggest lead was 18 points, that coming midway through the fourth quarter.
Smith finished 10-of-15 from the field for Missouri in recording her fourth double-double of the season.
Haley Troup, a freshman, finished with 14 points for the Tigers, including a trio of 3-pointers. Jordan Chavis, a junior, added 11 points. Missouri senior Sophie Cunningham had just four points before fouling out.
West Virginia is now 4-2.
Missouri (6-2) is back in action Thursday night against UMKC. The game will start at 7 p.m. at Mizzou Arena.
