Voters asked to check status after moving

The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 6 general election is Oct. 10.

On Tuesday, officials at the Missouri Secretary of State's Office in Jefferson City sent out a notice stating a federal judge recently found the Missouri Department of Revenue violated the National Voter Registration Act, commonly called the "Motor Voter" law. According to Communications Coordinator Nick Omland, the judge found the DOR had not provided all Missourians who changed their mailing address on driver or non-driver licenses an opportunity to also change their voter registration.

At the beginning of August 2017, the department revised their change of address process, effectively eliminating the step through which customers could update their address with the secretary of state's office or local election authority.

To assist the department in complying with the judge's order, the Secretary of State's office has mailed 22,404 notices, which included a voter registration application, to Missourians who changed their mailing address on driver and non-driver licenses with the Department of Revenue between Aug. 1, 2017, and Sept. 26, 2018.

People can also visit the Callaway County Clerk's office at 10 E. Fifth St., Fulton, to change their address. In addition, absentee voting is now open.

Voting in a county or precinct that does not represent your current residence on the day of the election is a violation of Missouri statute and can be prosecuted by law. For more information about voter registration, call 5783-642-0730.

To confirm you are registered to vote, visit the Secretary of State's website or check with the Callaway County Clerk's Office. Voters  can also find out what their voting location is.

If individuals used the department's driver or non-driver license change of address procedure online or on Form 4160, they will receive a notification with instructions to check their voter registration information or register to vote.

Should a Missourian receive this notice, be advised the deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 6 general election is Wednesday. The Callaway County Courthouse will be closed Monday for Columbus Day, but open on the 10th as normal. Mail-in voter registration applications must be postmarked by Wednesday.
