Jefferson City sales taxes continue upswing

Most sales tax revenues for Jefferson City continue to show positive signs, according to discussion at Thursday's Jefferson City Finance Committee meeting.

The city's 1 percent sales tax has generated $4.5 million so far in the fiscal year - $65,572 under projections.

The half-cent capital improvement sales tax brought in $340,162 for the March reporting period - $228,637 over projections - and the parks half-cent sales tax brought in $340,162 - $130,660 over projections.

The city's general fund has $15,944,996, which is $87,202 more than projections; however, two areas that make up the fund came in less than projections. Fines were down $108,000, but city officials said much of that can be attributed to state laws that cap how much can be collected on certain fines and forfeitures, an issue to be addressed in next year's budget. Also below projections was money collected from utilities, particularly from natural gas usage, down $187,000, which was attributed to the mild weather.

The city collected $62,368 in lodging tax in March, while hotel room occupancy was up from a year ago - 62.2 percent this year compared to 59.8 percent in 2016. So far, since voters approved increasing the lodging tax from 4 cents per dollar to 7 cents in 2011, the city has collected more than $3.8 million toward its conference center fund.
