Who is the fairest in Callaway?
The Miss Callaway County pageant once again will seek to answer that question during the Fulton Street Fair June 20-21.
June 1 is the deadline to register for the contest, which consists of personal interviews, talent and an opening number to be performed Saturday. There is a $25 entry fee as well as a $100 sponsor fee.
With contest rules making last year's winners ineligible to compete again and only a few contestants signed up so far, former Miss Callaway County and pageant coordinator Taylor Bryant said "we've got a lot of great opportunities for girls to run."
Up for grabs is a $1,000 scholarship for the young woman who receives the crown on Saturday, with cash prizes going to the girls competing for the Junior Miss Callaway and Mini Miss Callaway titles as well. The winners will be crowned at the end of the public portion of the pageant, which runs from 2-4 p.m. Saturday on The Callaway Bank stage at Fifth Street.
Miss Callaway, Junior Miss Callaway and Mini Miss Callaway appear in the Fulton Street Fair and Fulton Jaycees Christmas parades as well as other events throughout the year.
The Miss Callaway County pageant is open to ladies ages 17-21; the Junior Miss pageant is open to girls ages 13-16 and the Mini Miss contest is open to girls ages 8-12. Contestants must turn the minimum age by Sept. 1.
The Miss and Junior Miss pageants will consist of personal interviews, a speech or talent competition, an evening gown display and on-stage questions.
The Mini Miss pageant will consist of personal interviews, outfit of choice, Sunday best dress and on-stage questions pulled off of entry forms to provide easy-to-answer questions.
Bryant said she is hoping to have some new faces on the stage.
"Take a leap of faith, even if pageants are not something you're familiar with," Bryant said. "I know many people are scared about the agriculture question, but I always remind girls they can make it something they can relate to, just take the word "ag' out of it. It's not about getting the question right, it's more about how you represent yourself."
