Fulton boys' tennis tops Battle, Columbia Independent

The Hornets topped the Battle Spartans 6-3 and outlasted Columbia Independent 5-4 in matches played on Thursday at the high school athtletic complex.

Junior Justin Schneider defeated Dunkan Galen of Battle 8-6 at No. 1 singles, while freshman Grant Hendricks put away Lorenzo Wright 8-5 at No. 2.

Isiah Irvin beat Hornet freshman Devan Hudson 8-6 at No. 3 singles, but the Spartans forfeited the Nos. 5 and 6 single matches, and the No. 3 doubles contest. Schneider and Hendricks prevailed over Galen and Wright 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Fulton (4-14) bowed in four matches played against Columbia Independent, but picked up forfeit wins in the final three singles matches and the last two doubles duels.

"I got to play some guys in different rank order and it was a good experience for the guys on the team, and it was good to get a win in the midst of that," Hornets head coach Rob Fisher said.

Fulton host Helias at 4:30 p.m. today.
