Dozens of supporters crowded a Fulton field Monday as city officials and project backers ceremonially broke ground on the new animal shelter.
Fulton Mayor LeRoy Benton presided over the ceremony, heralding the arrival of a new, larger animal shelter off of Industrial Drive to replace the aging Garrett Animal Shelter, an undersized building originally utilized as a "temporary" solution that has been in use since the 1990s.
With $230,000 of the project's $300,000 price tag raised through community contributions, Benton said it has "definitely become a community effort."
"What a great day for Fultonians," Benton said. "The community has taken a lot of ownership and pride in this project."
Benton said contractors will begin work on the site as soon as weather permits.
