William Woods University used four pitchers and was outhit by visiting Culver-Stockton College 11-6, but the Owls still came away with a narrow 5-4 victory in their home opener Tuesday afternoon.

William Woods (13-3) got on the scoreboard with two outs in the bottom of the first inning when senior designated hitter Matt Thomas reached base on an error, allowing junior center fielder Cody Stewart to score. Culver-Stockton then tied the game at 1-all in the second when left fielder Cody Jacobson hit a leadoff home run off William Woods senior starter Bubba Bradshaw.

Thomas, junior second baseman Javier Ledesma and freshman shortstop Tyler Nemmers each contributed RBI singles as part of the Owls' four-run third as they pushed out to a 5-1 advantage.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Lady Owls managed just five hits in Tuesday's doubleheader, but still came away with a split against the Lady Wildcats.

Senior left fielder Lindsey LeCuru drove in all four runs for William Woods University in its shutout victory in the first game. LeCuru smacked a two-out, bases-clearing triple to right-center in the top of the third inning. She did more two-out damage in the seventh when her single brought home freshman center fielder Hannah Campbell to cap off the scoring.

LeCuru and Campbell both went 2-for-4 to account for the Lady Owls' four hits. Campbell had a double and a stolen base.

William Woods senior starter MacKenzie Bowden (6-4) went the distance for the seventh time this season, while notching her first shutout. Bowden tossed a three-hitter, struck out a season-high 15 and issued only one walk.

William Woods University senior guards Katie Scherder and Andraquay Quinnine were second- and third-team selections, respectively, and junior guard Blake French was an honorable-mention pick on the 2013-14 all-American Midwest Conference team announced Monday night.
