Freedom Fund Banquet returns

Fulton NAACP, Youth Life Improvement Association bring back traditional event

A longtime tradition that has been on hiatus makes its return March 22.

The Fulton branch of the NAACP and the Youth Life Improvement Association will sponsor its Freedom Fund Banquet, 6 p.m. March 22 at Tucker Dining Hall of William Woods University.

This year's theme is "Spirit of Togetherness" and will feature Kevin D. Rome Sr., president of Lincoln University.

Branch Membership Chair Goldie Vaughn said that the NAACP used to hold the event every year until they had problems finding a suitable venue.

For the Freedom Fund Banquet's return, Vaughn said she was excited to host Rome as the speaker, who was invited due to his involvement in academics. The banquet helps support the NAACP's scholarship programs.

"We hope we can encourage more kids to participate in higher education ... not only a university, but even a trade school just to continue their education," Vaughn said. "Because we're going to need it."
