Hornets can't recover from flat first half in 63-60 loss to Battle

January 21st, 2014 in News

The Fulton Hornets didn't lose to the Battle Spartans in the final minutes or last few plays, according to head coach Ryan Shaw.

Fulton undermined itself with an uninspired first half and a second-half rally came up short as the Hornets fell to Battle 63-60 on Tuesday night.

Fulton (5-10) trailed 35-23 at the start of the third quarter and would fall behind by 15 points early in the period. Shaw put the Hornets in a zone defense to start the second half and decided to run junior guard Ricky Dawson along the baseline to open up opportunities for the rest of the offense.

Senior guard Nick Jones tallied a team-high 18 points as the host Eagles fended off the Saints on Tuesday night.

Senior forward Trey Thornton also supplied 14 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds for MSD (7-4).

"We don't have a lot of shooters, so we've worked primarily on defense this season," Eagles head coach Dick Keller said. "I thought we gave (Central Missouri) a tough time; we worked on our speed and keeping our hands back."
