Totta, Lady Hornets halt two-game skid

Fulton sophomore guard Sloane Totta knocked down a game-high 27 points and the Lady Hornets stopped a two-game losing streak with a 61-40 non-conference romp over Montgomery County on Thursday night at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.

Fulton broke out to a 21-9 advantage after one quarter, carried a 38-16 lead into the break and was in front 53-28 entering the fourth quarter.

"We wanted to start off the game on fire, and that's what we did," Lady Hornets head coach TJ Quick said. "In the last three or four games we've been sluggish in the first quarter.

"From the (opening) tip, we took it to them ..."

Totta also grabbed eight rebounds, handed out six assists and came up with five steals as Fulton raised its season record to 7-13. Sophomore forward NaShayla Brandt posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

NEW BLOOMFIELD - Junior center Zoe Welschmeyer recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds Thursday night to power the Lady Wildcats' dismantling of the Lady Tigers.

New Bloomfield raced to a 17-4 lead after one quarter and stretched its advantage to 33-8 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats owned a 47-18 lead going into the fourth quarter.

"We came out pretty good in the first quarter," New Bloomfield head coach Brett Craighead said. "We were able to get some picks (steals), get down the floor and get some easy baskets. That made our offense go."

Senior guard Andraquay Quinnine tied the game high with 18 points, but the Lady Owls couldn't hold on to their hafltime lead as they fell to the Lady Scots in American Midwest Conference play Thursday night at Anderson Arena.

William Woods University (16-8, 9-7 AMC) shot just 33 percent in the first half, but limited Lyon to a meager 28-percent shooting effort during that span and carried a 20-17 edge into the break.

Junior guard Blake French hit a layup with 17 minutes, 20 seconds left in the game to put the Lady Owls up by seven points, but Lyon proceeded to rip off 16 unanswered points over the next 4:24 to take a 35-29 lead with 12:56 remaining.

William Woods trailed by as many as seven points, but closed within 46-44 when senior guard Katie Scherder completed a three-point play with 1:59 remaining. The Lady Owls were outscored 6-1 down the stretch as their winning streak was halted at three games.

Scherder added eight points for William Woods, which shot 35 percent (17-of-48) overall.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -The Owls rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to top the Bucs in their season opener Thursday.

Center fielder Justin Neal put Christian Brothers College with a two-run single off William Woods University junior starter Ryan Yuengel in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Casey Goodwin's double to left scored designated hitter Charles Kelly to give the Bucs a three-run advantage.

Senior left fielder Zach Nichols reached base on a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth for the Owls, allowing junior shortstop Javier Ledesma to score William Woods' first run.

Junior guard Brandon Moore logged a game-high 14 points as the Blue Jays extended their season-high winning streak with a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home victory over the Tigers on Wednesday night.

Westminster College (14-8, 11-4) picked up its sixth straight victory and sits in fourth place in the SLIAC standings with three regular-season games left.

The Blue Jays led for much of the first half, but a 3-pointer by Chris Martin cut Iowa Wesleyan College's deficit to 21-19 with 6 minutes, 7 seconds left. Moore then connected on a 3-pointer with 3:35 to go, sparking an 8-2 run to put Westminster up 29-21 at the half.

Junior guard Verdis Lee Jr. hit a trey to give the Blue Jays their biggest lead at 48-34 with 6:50 remaining. However, a 12-2 run by the Tigers over the next 3:10 brought their deficit down to four with 3:40 to play.

Westminster outscored Iowa Wesleyan 6-1 down the stretch, with Moore accounting for five points.
