Ladybirds use fast start to sink Silex 49-34

North Callaway took control by going up 22-6 after one quarter and the Ladybirds remained unbeaten in the Eastern Missouri Conference with a 49-34 victory over Silex on Thursday night.

North Callaway (16-5, 6-0 EMO) owned a 29-15 advantage at halftime and outscored Silex 10-4 in the third quarter to stretch its advantage to 39-19.

"We got out on them early, which allowed for a lot of playing time," Ladybirds head coach Matt Miller said. "That will help with the depth of our team when it gets to district time."

Senior guard Jaida Gray directed North Callaway with 12 points, four assists and five steals. Junior guard Elaine Brinker also supplied 11 points, four assists and seven steals.

Silex 42

SILEX - The Thunderbirds erased a four-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Owls 34-15 in the second half to pull away for Thursday night's Eastern Missouri Conference victory.

North Callaway trailed 27-23 at the break, but broke out in the third quarter and outscored Silex 22-8 to open up a 45-35 edge. The Thunderbirds secured the win by outscoring the Owls 12-7 in the fourth quarter.

"Our adjustment at halftime (switching from zone to man-to-man defense) was the difference in the game," North Callaway head coach Tim Turlington said. "We did a great job on the defensive end and were patient on the offensive end in coming up with good shots."

Senior forward Brett Metcalf registered a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds to spark the Thunderbirds (9-12, 4-2 EMO). Junior guard Brandon Hagedorn added 13 points and senior guard Chance Kee had 10.
